Hamilton cancels Kennedy Center run; Grenell fires back

The producer of the Broadway musical “Hamilton” will cancel plans to perform at Washington's Kennedy Center next year, pointing to a “buying” of President Trump in Washington, bringing out a pushback from the new interim executive director.

Lead producer Jeffrey Seller called the Kennedy Center a “secret” setting that should be “protected from politics.”

“Given recent actions, our show cannot conscientiously participate in part of this new culture imposed on the Kennedy Center.” I said in a statement on Wednesday.

Sellers said the third iteration of “Hamilton” at the Kennedy Center, scheduled for March 3-April 26, has been cancelled.

“We are not against his administration, but against the Kennedy Center's partisan policies as a result of his recent acquisition,” the producer wrote.

President Trump was appointed chairman of Washington's Cultural Agency in early February after finishing the terms of multiple members of the Kennedy Center board. At the time, Trump said, “It makes the Kennedy Center a very special and exciting place!”

Many stars fled the Kennedy Center Group after the president was chaired.

Trump also appointed Richard Grenell's envoy for the special mission as interim executive director of the center, saying that the former acting director of national intelligence shares his vision, “overseeing the Center's day-to-day operations for the golden age of American art and culture.”

Grennell hit the seller and show creator Lynn Manuel Miranda, who coordinated the “promotion stunts” and insisted that Republican voters didn't want them to attend their show.

“The seller and @lin_manuel went to the New York Times for the first time before coming to the Kennedy Center with an announcement that they couldn't stay in the same room as Republicans,” Grenell said. I said Wednesday of X. “This is a backfire publicity stunt. Art is for everyone – not just for people who like and agree with Lin.”

“The American people need to know that @lin_manuel is intolerant of people who don't agree with him politically. It's clear that he and the sellers don't want Republicans to go to their shows,” added Grenell, a former German ambassador.

The show took place at the Center during Trump's first term in 2018 and during former President Biden's term in 2022.

Sellers said the “neutrality” at the Kennedy Center was “destroyed” and that a recent “purging” of professional staff and performing arts events “fly in the face of everything this natural cultural center represents.”

He said cancellations were also “business decisions.”

“Hamilton” is a massive, global production and if the new leadership at the Kennedy Center suddenly cancels or renegotiates our engagement, it would be financially and personally devastating to hundreds of “Hamilton” employees,” the seller said.

“The actions of the board president over the last few weeks show that they simply can't trust the contract and previous contracts,” he added. “This is sad because basic integrity and the rule of law have long been great American principles that served as the foundation of our nation.”
