New records show that after the sanctuary city of Denver, Colorado, members of an illegal alien gang were caught by cameras attacking Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers after the sanctuary city of Denver, Colorado.
At a hearing Wednesday, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, D., was one of four Democratic mayors testifying about the city's sanctuary policy before the House Oversight Committee.
Johnston suggested he proposed last year that he would be willing to go to prison to protect illegal foreigners from federal immigration enforcement.
Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) burned Johnston in the case of Abraham Gonzalez, a member of the known illegal alien gang of Venezuela's violent Tren de Aragua. Gonzalez was first released to the United States in September 2023 by former President Joe Biden's administration.
A few months after his release within the US, Gonzalez was arrested for aggravated assault. In March 2024, he was arrested for car theft and felony threats.
Six days after the imposing accusations against him, Ice Agent demanded custody of Gonzalez and sought 48 hours of notice from the Denver Sheriff's department prior to his release from prison.
Instead, according to notification documents issued by Jordan, the Denver Sheriff's department released Gonzalez “on the street” in compliance with the city's sanctuary policy, giving an hour's notice to ice deputies.
Another document shows the Denver Sheriff's department warn Gonzalez that he is about to arrest him when he is released from prison.
The ice agents were then forced to try and arrest gang members in the prison parking lot rather than in the prison.
Six ICE agents were involved in the arrest and were captured on surveillance footage. One of the agents can be seen being assaulted by Gonzalez.
“The police officer was assaulted for you. [sanctuary] Jordan told Johnston.
President Donald Trump's Department of Justice (DOJ) is trying to eliminate sanctuary jurisdictions like U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondy's Denver.
Bondi also ordered the DOJ to suspend federal funds going to sanctuary jurisdictions like Denver. At present, several sanctuary jurisdictions are suing the administration over the move.
