New Mexico Democrats continue to push for the ban on semi-automatic firearms, expressing a language ban ban on gas-operated firearms.
On February 7, 2025, Breitbart News reported that New Mexico's Democrats had revived the Michel Legian Grisham government, which they hoped to have their nomination in 2023, and was pushing it as Senate Bill 279.
On December 13, 2023, Breitbart News observed that Grisham wanted Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) to model a law modelled on the Semi-Automatic Firearms Exclusion (GOSAFE) Act for Gas Operations. Although Gosafé failed to pass at the federal level, Grisham believed it could push the New Mexico Legislature by her fellow Democrats.
SB 279 is currently moving through the New Mexico Legislature.

SB 279…An attempt to ban gas-operated semi-automatic firearms that are commonly owned. The Attorney General will identify firearms that are prohibited. This vague language can overpower unelected officials and allow them to voluntarily decide which firearms are prohibited. The bill also bans standard capacity magazines and ammunition feeding devices. These devices are essential for self-defense and sports shooting. SB279 also bans machine guns and rapid firefighting equipment, turning law-abiding citizens into criminals to own current legal items.
The Dudley Brown Association of Gun Rights Association said, “The National Gun Rights Association has dragged Governor Michel Lejean Grisham into court over a previous unconstitutional carry ban. We sounded an alarm when Lejean Grisham opened the door wide for gun control during a special session last summer. We will continue to mobilize gun owners across fascinating lands as they attempt to stop the ban on this “attack weapon.”
