Sunday shows preview: House GOP unveils bill to avert shutdown; Trump's tariffs teeter

House Republicans have announced a 99-page six-month suspension funding bill to avoid government shutdowns and increase defense funds, calling for cuts to de-evacuation programs, which are likely to be the main focus of this Sunday show.

Republicans said the bill, released Saturday, will greenlight a defence funding increase of around $6 billion above the level of fiscal year 2024, and will also raise funding for housing and healthcare for veterans along with funding for the WIC program. Non-defense programs' funding will decrease by approximately $13 billion at the 2024 level. The bill to avoid government closures is due next midnight Friday.

President Trump's trade war with top US trading partners intensified this week. After first enacting tariffs on goods coming from Canada, Mexico and China on Tuesday, the president postponed most of them placed in Mexico City and Ottawa. On Friday, he threatened to slap fresh taxes on Canadian lumber and dairy products. Ottawa's tariffs on American products are still in place. Ontario said it will implement electricity tariffs on its way to the three US starting Monday. Tariffs will likely be the main point of discussion on Sunday.

On the foreign policy front, the president said he is hampering additional sanctions on Russia and pressured the Kremlin to participate in peace talks. Still, Trump said earlier this week that he was struggling to deal with Ukraine.

“I think we're doing very well with Russia, but now they're bombing hell from Ukraine,” Trump told White House reporters. “Frankly, I find it even more difficult to deal with Ukraine. And they don't have cards. They don't have cards.”

His remarks came after the US stopped sharing military aid and intelligence news with Ukraine. Perhaps it is a way to push Kiev to advance peace deals and pressure Ukrainian President Voldymir Zelensky to sign a mineral contract that acts as a deterrent against future Kremlin attacks.

Fiona Hill, a former Russian White House adviser, is scheduled to appear on CBS's “Face the Nation,” and will discuss the latest before and after between Washington and Kiev and the potential meeting between US and Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia next week.

Rep. Ami Bella (D-Calif) was one of the 10 House Democrats who voted to denounce fellow Democrats (Texas) on Thursday, two days after lawmakers appointed a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night. The California Democrat will be featured on News Nation's “The Hill Sunday,” where he prides Greene and details his vote to comment on Saturday's ongoing resolution (CR) announced by House Republicans.

The White House confirmed this week that it is in direct communication with Palestinian extremist group Hamas regarding the release of the remaining hostages in the Gaza Strip. Talks are taking place amid a fragile ceasefire the group clinged to Israel in January.

Adam Berer, the special envoy of the Special President for the Hostage Issue, spoke directly with Hamas. He will be appearing in CNN's “The State of the Union” and “Fox News Sunday,” and will talk about the latest developments that will free hostages from war-torn enclaves.
