Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on recession risk and tariffs

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick rejected the market, highlighting the risk of a recession even as it slides. And America's biggest trading partner said it could easily avoid Trump's two modest tariffs.

When asked if he was worried about the US going into a recession on NBC's Meet the Press, Lutnick gave a clear answer.

“It's definitely not. Anyone who bets on Donald Trump is the same people that Donald Trump thought he had no intention of winning a year ago. Donald Trump is the winner,” Rutnick said.

“There's no recession in America, the Commerce secretary added.

“You'll see the biggest growth set from America over the next two years.”

Goldman Sachs It is predicted The risk of a recession was an increase of 20% over the next 12 months amid uncertainty due to tariffs.

Lutnik also explained that Trump's decision on whether to maintain tariffs is conditional on actions by Canada, China and Mexico.

Last Tuesday, the Trump administration slapped 25% onboard tariffs in Canada and Mexico, and slapped 20% onboard tariffs in China.

Trump, 78, did so under the International Emergency Economic Force Act. This gives the President a broad authority to use tariffs during emergencies.

Justifications for these tariffs are fatal fentanyl smuggling into the United States and, in the case of US neighbours, the illegal immigration crisis. In November, Trump gave three countries an ultimatum to stop the flow of synthetic opiods.

The market is rattling due to tariffs, which has affected around $1.5 trillion worth of goods and services. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped around 1,098 points over the past week, but the S&P slipped 198 points and the Nasdaq lost 727 points in the same time frame.

“This is how you run the country,” Lutnick insisted. “You close the borders and let our neighbors do their jobs. We're not the only ones who have to do their jobs. Why are our neighbors living in our economy not caring for America?”

Shortly after imposing the tariffs, Trump quickly added important sculptures to mitigate the impact of his obligations on imports.

He eased tariffs on automobile imports and subsequently exempts products or services covered by the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), a trade agreement he negotiated during his first term.

“Everyone outside that contract, anyone who took the risk, who has not paid attention and respects the agreement that President Trump served his first term will pay 25% tariffs,” Lutnick explained.

“And that's like meeting in the middle,” he added. “Canada and Mexico have promised they will crush the border and they will crush the fentanyl, and that's why our president is here and that's to stop fentanyl from killing Americans.”

As for the time the tariffs end, Lutonic has repeatedly relied on whether Mexico and Canada step up or not.

“If fentanyl is finished, I think these are off, but if fentanyl doesn't finish, or if he's unsure about it, they'll stay this way until they're comfortable,” Rutnick said.

“This is black and white. You have to save America's lives.”

Trump will also pursue other tariffs, including the mutual tariffs for April 2nd.

On Thursday, Trump held a meeting with Cabinet officials and Office of Government Efficiency (DOGE) boss Elon Musk, hashing the difference in cuts.

President Trump continued last week about threats to tariffs in Canada, Mexico and China.

Musk had clashed with Transport Secretary Sean Duffy and Secretary of State Marco Rubio during the meeting. The New York Times reported.

Trump has since disrespected the reported flap. After the meeting, he was restraining Musk and publicly announced that Cabinet officials would lead staffing decisions.

“What President Trump has revealed is that Elon is your partner and that's what we want,” Lutnick said of the meeting. “You are the greatest businessman in the world as my partner and have a great engineer.”

“The government is growing insanely. We need to cut the size of this government, but the president's advice and guidance has been very sharp,” Lutnick added. “Let's cut it with a Mesulpel. Let's sharpen it.”
