Transgender actress Karla Sofía Gascón looked back on her own mental health struggle after the controversial tweet resurfaced at the peak of the awards season.
Gascon, the first openly trans actor to be nominated for an Academy Award, faced an onslaught of backlash after the reveal of old social media posts about George Floyd and Islam.
The “Emilia Perez” actress repeatedly apologised for her tweet at the time and dumped X, but she was mostly phased out from Netflix's Oscar campaign and made another public appearance to attend the Academy Awards as a nominee.
Gascon has been forced by his daughter and “future generations” to open up “honest discussions” about mental health now that the award is over. She recalls “a dark moment – an episode in which despair led me to an unexpected place.”

“This last episode has been the most talked about and the most exposed about my life, so some fake accounts have been created to add to the pain and confusion,” she said. Hollywood Reporter of controversy. “Even absurd and paranoid accusations were thrown at me. It hurt my mind deeply. Things escalated to the point, so fast I couldn't even breathe.”

“I had a darker thought than I had thought of in some of my previous, so intimate and personal struggles,” Gascon said. “And I asked myself, what would happen if I were to be someone with less emotional resources to resist this onslaught, with all the power and preparation to deal with anger and rejection? Somehow, I made it.

Gascon admits that her personal “storm” has settled down, “the worst has passed.”
“I have learned that hatred cannot be placed with more hatred like fire,” she said. “I can't erase a crime with more crimes, and mistakes can't wipe out other mistakes, especially when lies and falsehoods multiply around and what's sent back to me is pure anger, blatant bullying, hostility, minor corn, or even death threats.
She said, “Fortunately, I saw the light at the end of this tunnel of hatred, realising that I had to do better, and maintained my 1 inch sanity to fix the flaws of the past without being involved in more darkness. Otherwise, if I play their games and amplify hatred for each other, I won't get lost.

In 2020, Gascon shared a post criticizing Islam, writing, “We will not end some of the major issues we face until we ban religion against European values and violate human rights such as Islam under the protection of freedom of worship.”

She was also criticising Oscar in 2021. “#Oscar looks like an independent protest movie ceremony. I didn't know if I was watching the Afro-Collian Festival, Black Live Matter demonstrations or 8m.
“Emilia Perez” was nominated for 13 Oscars and won two awards, including Zoe Saldana.
