Wikipedia disrupted by ‘edit wars’ to manipulate pages on war in Gaza: report

The report says tensions are brewing on Wikipedia in the war in Gaza as volunteer editors launched an “editorial war” to manipulate the page tilt.

The nonprofit encyclopedia has banned at least 14 editors from working on topics related to the Israeli-Hamas war as it faces growing accusations of left-leaning bias. According to Bloomberg.

Even the founders of the site are at odds over whether to reveal the identity of Wikipedia contributors.

Some volunteer editors are said to have conspired with other contributors to change the pages of the Middle East conflict to match their agenda.

The Heritage Foundation, a conservative DC-based think tank, reportedly plans to “identify and target” the heads of Antisemitic, The Forward, The Forward, The Forward and The Forward, reported in January.

Co-founder Larry Sanger supported the Heritage Foundation's alleged plan to reveal and target Wikipedia editors in question. This is a sharp reversal from Wikipedia's tradition of anonymity.

Sanger, who has frequently criticized Wikipedia's so-called left-leaning bias since leaving the organization in 2002, states in an X post, “people with key authority in the administrators and systems should be as easily named and embarrassed as ordinary journalists.”

Meanwhile, co-founder Jimmy Wales called the editor a “very caring” scheme, according to Bloomberg.

“I agree that for many people doing that, the motivation seems to be a weakening of citizen norms and democracy,” he said.

Earlier last year, Wikipedia's Arbitration Committee banned three editors from its site in order to lead the Pro Israel campaign.

According to Bloomberg, one of the three editors began emailing other Wikipedia contributors shortly after the attack on Israel on October 7th, telling colleagues to make changes to the war page in Gaza.

On October 16, one of the accused editors sent an email to a colleague working on PIA pages or on Palestine and Israeli articles.

As Bloomberg saw, the editor wrote in an email, “Please vote to delete or merge the article.”

They called the editors of the page “promotioners” and accused the article of “silly.”

Meanwhile, according to Bloomberg, a group of editors called Palestinian Tech for Palestine, who are said to have coordinated Pro-Palestine editing on Discord, an instant messaging platform.

In April, X's account, Zei squirrel, announced plans that “adjusting actions to counter Zionest's propaganda will lie about facts about Wikipedia.” The account has 275,000 followers.

According to Bloomberg, the following month, Discord said that those who claim to be behind the X account had created a mailing list to send updates on compiling articles about Israel and Palestine.

These types of mailing lists (also known as “secret canvas”) break the rules of Wikipedia.

As the “editorial war” got worse, contradictory explanations of the singular events in the Gaza Strip continued into the beginning of this year.

According to Bloomberg, the first Wikipedia page described the June 8 event at the Nusayrat refugee camp as a “rescue” operation to save hostages that led to a shootout between Hamas militants and Israeli forces.

Another wikipage called the June 8 event a “genocide,” killing at least 274 people and injuring another 700.

Wikipedia has been accused by Jews and conservative groups of people for increasing left-leaning bias across its pages.

The Post's editorial board is asking the leading tech companies to block Wikipedia for Blackling's right-sided news source.

Trump's ally and face of the efficiency of the government department, Elon Musk, the White House's cost-cutting task force, denounced the site as “Wokepedia.”

Musk urged his followers to stop making donations to Wikipedia.

“Every time Elon tweets about his nonsense, we don't wonder about the surge in donations,” Wales told Bloomberg in an email. “Wikipedia is an antidote to his brand's sloppy misinformation, and the public knows it.”

Musk did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Sanger doesn't seem to agree. Last month, in an X post, Wiki co-founder asked Musk and Doge to investigate whether government officials were paid to edit Wikipedia pages to a particular slope.
