There are interesting sliding door moments from 24-48 hours, if not separated, or at least not separated by Gerrit Cole.
Cole opted out of the last four years and the remaining $144 million of his contract, as well as his contract. The Yankees could have prevented him from heading to a free agency by tacking for $36 million in additional seasons to create a five-year, $180 million agreement and creating the full value of his deal for $360 million.
However, the Yankees did not agree to add that year. But the side did one-on-one relationship counseling, and they decided they wanted to be together, and did it for the $144 million portion of that four years, falling into a “nothing to see here” mode.
