President Trump ordered an additional 25% tariff on Canada's steel and aluminum imports on Tuesday, and more than 25% on electricity, in response to charging Americans in parts of the three border states.
The tariffs will come into effect Wednesday morning, bringing up to 50% of the total US collection on Canada's steel and aluminum. Trump also requested Canada to eliminate 250% to 390% tariffs on American dairy products.
Trump's announcement comes a day after Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford slapped a 25% extra charge for energy exports to clients in three U.S. states in Canada, New York, Michigan and Minnesota. Ford also threatens to shut down exports entirely.
“I will soon declare a national emergency regarding electricity within the threatened region, which will allow the United States to do what it has to do to mitigate this abusive threat from Canada,” Trump writes of the True Society.
“If other terrible, long-term tariffs do not fall similarly by Canada, I will significantly increase the tariffs on cars coming to the US on April 2nd.
Trump plans to roll out mutual tariffs on imports from around the world, including Japan and the European Union, early next month.
