Southwest Airlines to Charge Some Flyers for Checked Bags

There have been many moans after Dallas-based Southwest Airlines decided to start billing several travelers for check bags.

The decision comes after putting a lot of pressure from Elliott Investment Management, which acquired the airline's shares in 2024. It has been reported on tuesday.

In July, the airline announced it would end its tradition of opening seats on flights. More recently, Southwest Airlines said in February it was cutting 15% of the company's role to cut costs and shake up the company.

The CNBC report details the moves regarding the check bag.

For tickets purchased after May 28th, Southwest customers will have to pay for all customers except first-class fare classes to check their bags, with exceptions. Elite Frequent Flyers with “A-List Priority” status get two bags, and A-List Level members get one free check bag. Southwest credit card holders will also get one free check bag.

“Two Bags Fly Free” is a registered trademark of the Southwest website. However, federal data shows that the decision of executives cast as Saxan passengers to cast as Saxan parks will win the largest U.S. domestic airline alongside their rivals and generate more than $5 billion in bag fees last year.

Customers who spoke to 11 living people Expression I was choosing an airline because my luggage flew free, which shocked the news about checked luggage.

“Like the economy, everyone likes free luggage. I mean, I think you have to do what you have to do. But I don't think too many people will be happy with it,” one man told the outlet:

Company executives have long said they have not planned to charge customers for checked bags, according to CNBC reports.

“On Investor's Day in September, Southwest said it would increase between $1 billion and $1.5 billion from the bag bill, but lose $1.8 billion in market share. Southwest said in a presentation tied to Investor's Day, “the “rigorous research” would “generate market share profits that our 'bag' policy will generate more market share profits than potential lost revenue from bag fees,” the outlet said.
