How Max Fried is approaching Yankees ace role after Gerrit Cole injury

Tampa – Max Fried knows who he is and who he is.

He may have won the title of “Ace,” but his identity remains the same.

“I have to be fried,” he said on the morning on the left Tuesday morning. “You can't try and fill other people's shoes.”

Gerrit Cole's Cleats are unfulfilled because there are no one like Gerrit Cole, the mainstay of the Hall of Fame trajectory that avoided the kind of injuries that were ultimately hit this spring.

Cole was set to request Tommy John surgery on Tuesday.

Some of the people affected are fried foods, now virtually the number one pitcher and no longer Cole's companion.

“Obviously, I really feel him. It smells bad. He's a competitor and he wants to be there,” Freed said of Cole, who shared the clubhouse for about a month. “I was really excited to share the dugout and play with him. I'll be a little late.”

Lewis Gill's injury opened up Marcus Stroman's rotation spot, while Cole Crusher made the way for either Will Warren or longtime veteran Carlos Carrasco.

Fried, who signed an eight-year, $218 million contract this offseason, has certainly become the club's first day starter, but he said he has not yet been informed of the team's plans.

The Yankees' spring training was hit hard by injuries, from Cole to Gill, Giancarlo Stanton, DJ Lemahieu and most of their bullpen options.

Like Aaron's judge, Freed emphasized that it was March 11th. There's time to be healthy and the player has time to step up.
