Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced that he has reached an agreement with the US Secretary of Commerce to suspend a 25% tax on electricity imports into the US, suggesting Canada is a cave, following the threat of President Donald Trump's efforts to increase Canada's steel and aluminum tariffs to 50%.

But ironically, Ford made a declaration of opposition earlier this week. Ontario portrays it as a powerful force that does not retreat.
“President Trump's tariffs are a disaster for the US economy,” Ford said in a statement Monday. “They make life more expensive for American families and businesses. Ontario will not retreat until the tariff threat is permanently gone. We stand strong, use all the tools in our toolkit and do whatever it takes to protect Ontario.”
US-Mexico-Canada's free trade agreement was updated Thursday, with Ford and US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick announced in a statement, released with Lutnick, shared on X and voluntarily shared on April 2nd for Trumpnd “Mutual duties deadline.”
“In response, Ontario agreed to suspend a 25% surcharge for electricity exports to Michigan, New York and Minnesota,” Ford said.
Trump said in a follow-up statement at the White House on Tuesday afternoon that he was considering lowering Canada's tariffs. “Maybe so,” he replied when asked if he would consider lowering them.
“I'll let you know,” he continued, “Whether the 50% tariff in Canada will be effective — according to NBC News.
In response to Ontario's 25% tariff on electricity exported to the US, Trump said Tuesday in the True Society that tariffs on steel and aluminum would rise from 25% to 50%.
Additionally, Trump has warned that Canada will require the removal of high taxes on American dairy products and “significantly increase” tariffs on vehicles coming to the US unless they remove “other terrible, long-time tariffs.”
“Canada has been torn us apart with wood and dairy products for years,” Trump said at his oval office address, citing about 250% tariffs on US dairy exports to the United States.
Trump also argued that vehicle tariffs “essentially shut down Canadian auto manufacturing.”
“The only thing that makes sense is that Canada will become our precious 50 first states,” Trump wrote. “This will create all the tariffs and eliminate all else entirely.”
Late Monday, Trump also called Canada a longtime “tax abuser” in another post about the true society.
“The US is no longer planning to subsidize Canada,” Trump added.
Canada's recently appointed prime minister, Mark Carney, later described Trump's threat as “an attack on Canadian workers, families and businesses.”
“My government has been impacted while ensuring that our response has had the greatest impact on the US, ensuring minimal impact in Canada and supporting workers' impact,” Carney said.
