Track star Alaila Everett facing assault charge in baton-striking controversy

The high school runner, at the heart of the controversy that made the national headline, was charged with assault and battery after an incident at a Virginia High School track competition.

Brookville High School junior Karen Tucker was attacked by fellow batons of IC Norcom High School senior Alaila Everett in a 4x200m relay event in a video-catched scene at the state-level track competition last week.

The Lynchburg Commonwealth Law Office has charged Everett with one count of assault and battery. According to multiple reports.

In the moment after the incident, IC Norcom was disqualified from the race, Wavy reported.

Tucker also served as a conservation order for the Everett family.

Everett and Tucker were racing close to each other during the relay as they rounded the curve and Tucker was hit in the head with the baton.

Tucker quickly grabbed his head and came out of the truck. Everett seemed to be showing concern to her partner when Tucker grabbed her by the head.

Tucker told WSLS he went to the doctor afterwards and was told he had a concussion and could have a fractured skull.

Everett added that she was on the receiver of racial slander after the clip went viral.

“They assume my characters and 'ghetto' and racial slander, death threats… everything from the nine-second video,” she said, criticizing the reaction based on one angle of the incident.

“I have a lot of people in my corner. Teachers provide a place to stay in the classroom when things get overwhelmed. They let me stay in the gym, or if it's overwhelming, I go to the principal's office,” Everett told ABC News. “My community knows my personality… They know I'm not like that… They know it was an accident.”

Tucker's family previously told WSLS they had asked Everett to apologize.
