On Wednesday's broadcast of MSNBC's “All In,” Minnesota Gov. Tim Waltz (D) responded to a plan to eliminate the federal Department of Education by insisting that Ruby Bridge needed to escort people who went to Little Rock because there was no education department to ensure that her civil rights were respected. It's gone now.” And, “When Trump says it's a bunch of bureaucrats interfering with your local school, give you local control and we give you money, that sounds pretty good. And we're not offering what that alternative would look like.”
“What I'm worried about is the generational change that this brings. Ruby Bridge had to be escorted by those schools and those who entered Little Rock because there was no education department to ensure that her civil rights were respected. It's gone now. And my son, your viewers there now, have an individual education plan that made them flourish and make them the best people. And this will have a direct impact on local schools.”
He then added: “Are there any improvements we have to do? Yes. And I think we've been guilty of not acting sometimes. Is the Department of Education more efficient? Absolutely. Is there anything we can do there? It doesn't make sense to get rid of it. … Chris, if you go to ask the average American, what will the Department of Education do? They may not have a clear vision of it. So when you say Trump is a bunch of bureaucrats interfering with your local school, give you local control and we give you money, it sounds pretty good. And we're not offering what that alternative will look like.” And Democrats should “talk about what we're trying to do” to improve education.
