Florida's healthcare system was borne $660 million in the unpaid hospital bill in 2024, which was incurred by illegal immigrants, according to the state's latest report.
Sunshine State's “Hospital Patient Immigration Status Report,” Florida Department of Health Care Administration (AHCA), hospitals say they are “largely uncompensated” for health care that relies on illegal immigration, and many poor patients “contribute directly to the burden on Florida's health care system.”
Report It adds that $659.9 million was spent in 2024 on “providing care to illegal foreigners across the state.” The number exceeds the $566 million lost to illegals in 2023, but in 2023 it began tracking costs in June after state legislature passed a law that required the accumulation of data on unpaid hospital bills. “The agency is dedicated to fulfilling the Governor's DeSantis commitment to protecting taxpayer dollars to individuals that do not exist legally in the United States,” said Kim Soo-Ok, Associate Secretary of AHCA.
The AHCA administers the state's Medicaid program, regulates and licenses health facilities, and publishes state health data. The agency also has a dedicated Medicaid fraud unit that works directly with the Florida Attorney General's Office.
As a result of the 2023 law, the AHCA publishes a report on medical expenses for illegal foreigners on March 1st each year. However, even if reports are made, the loss could be even worse as the current law is based on data from patients who self-report the status of immigrants, and many illegal immigrants have not volunteered for that information.

ACHA Hospital Patient Immigration Status Dashboard splits data down to the county level, allowing residents to search for information online.
Counties with the highest percentage of patients who have told doctors and administrations that they are illegal foreigners include Miami-Dade, Lee and Manatee counties.
The top three counties include Miami-Dade, including Broward County, which reported losing $282.2 million, losing $77 million, and Hillsborough, which reported losses of $64.4 million.
Overall, the report allegedly accounted for 67,700 emergency room visits by illegal foreigners. However, many state hospitals have pointed out that more than half of their patients refused to say whether they were legal residents, so the real numbers are much higher.
For example, Spring Hill, Tampa General Hospital, said 63.4% of emergency room patients did not answer citizenship questions about granting documents.
