Former Republican Sen. Alan Simpson, known as a moderate conservative with a witty sense of humor, passed away Friday at the age of 93.

Associated Press Simpson reported that he had been struggling to recover from a broken waist since December.
Simpson was appointed co-chair in 2010, along with former deputy director Elskin Bowles, former vice-chief of staff for former President Bill Clinton on fiscal responsibility and reform by President Barack Obama.
Previous committees have been called “the first Doge” by political analysts. This is due to efforts to significantly reduce spending on defense, domestic spending and qualification programs, including Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
However, the committee failed to secure 14 of the 18 votes from its members and send the plan directly to Congress for the vote. They would have had to secure the vast majority of commissioners needed to force votes in Congress.
“He was a rare and generous man,” Simpson's older brother Pete said in a family statement. “And I'm generous in an absolutely unconditional way. Give him time, give him his energy, and he did it in politics, and he did it in family forever.”
Simpson's tenure at DC ended in 1997 after refusing to run for a fourth term in the Senate. His political career began in 1979.
“Al Simpson is known for his dedicated lifelong service and an unparalleled sense of humor. Whether he serves in the US Army, the Wyoming House of Representatives or the US Senate, his commitment and contributions have made the consequential difference.
“Others ran out of tough problems, but Al accepted the opportunity to solve them. He cherished every fight to do what he thought was right. He was a mentor and a dear friend. Al's incredible legacy would affect future generations,” he continued.
Furthermore, Sen. Cynthia Ramis (R-Wyo.) is similarly reflected on the positive impact on Simpson's life.
“Al, known for his famous humor and wit, was loved both in Wyoming and outside our borders. Those who met AL knew he would never forget his face and interaction. In addition to serving in the US military and the US Senate, Al repeatedly made progress as a civilian citizen to address key issues such as the Iraq Research Group and the Simpson Bowles Financial Responsibility Committee,” she said.
In 2022, Simpson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Biden.
“In spite of the increasing polarization, he took people along with wit and wisdom, made progress and found a common position. He was not afraid to stand up to what he felt was right, but he worked on pressing issues like campaign finance reform and marriage equality,” Biden said.
“Alan Simpson illustrates the national ideals of civil discourse, responsible governance and public services.”
