Beshear compares Trump, Musk to 'Thelma & Louise'

Kentucky Gov. Andy Besher (D) compared President Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk to “Thelma & Louise,” saying that potential Medicaid cuts would “destroy” rural health care.

“Look at his presidency. He's obsessed with all the issues except the economy. You see tariffs that raise prices. It means tens of thousands of Americans have lost their jobs and that's what they say is their fault,” Bessia spoke about Trump on CNN, referring to Musk's government efficiency division.

“We see potential Medicaid cuts between Trump and Musk that destroys rural healthcare. We don't know which is Thelma and which is Louise, but our economy is that car and they're driving it off the cliff,” Besher said.

Besher said Trump said he would lower prices for Americans. “And I believe he is the president because the last group of mobile voters was sure he would focus on the prices of the economy,” he said, adding that Trump is “obsessed with all issues other than the economy.”

Beshear's hometown is expected to be hit hard by European Union tariffs imposed on whiskey, which the governor called “devastating for the bourbon industry and for my people.”

“We make 90% of the world's bourbon and 100% of the bourbon that is worth drinking,” Besher said.

The whiskey tariffs announced in response to the US administration's steel and aluminum tariffs are expected to take effect on April 1, just before separate mutual tariffs Trump plans to place in the EU.

Beshear said the impact of these policies was already visible as Canada retaliated with a 25% tariff on products imported from the US.

“Some of these state liquor stores are pulling bourbon entirely off the shelf,” he added.

Trump threatened a 200% tariff on European wine and champagne in response to EU tariffs.

“If this tariff is not removed immediately, the US will soon place a 200% tariff on all wines, champagne and alcoholic products representing France and the other EU,” Trump wrote. “This is perfect for the US wine and champagne business.”
