How Islanders’ Max Tsyplakov reacted to Patrick Roy’s criticism

Max Tsyplakov personally did not take it.

He knows he made a mistake by lifting the puck deeper in his zone on Tuesday night, then making a mistake directly towards his goal. And more than that, he hasn't been excited about his game in general lately.

So, hearing about coach Patrick Roy and telling him he needs to be better after losing to the King.

“It was my mistake with my second goal,” Tsyplakov said Friday before the islanders lost 2-1 overtime to Edmonton. “I need to be better with the pack, and I'm probably safer. Don't give it all. Be better with the pack.”

Roy said the message was passed on to Tosiprakov in a press conference after his defeat, after being privately communicated to Tesiprakov.

“I want to make sure they're always having that conversation with players they know,” Roy said. “I don't want you to read on paper what I have to say. I'm rather against it. But Shippy is a great hockey player. He's a great person. But at the same time, my job is to keep our guys accountable. I want to be positive, but I want to be true too.”

Tsyplakov, 26, may now be hitting the rookie wall in his first NHL season after jumping from Russia this summer.

After being a staple on the second line until mid-December, his role became less consistent and his score fell off the cliff.

He is one of the more physical players of the Islanders, third in the hits behind Casey Ciszicus and Jean Gabriel Pago, but has now reached 26 games without scoring since Friday.

Also, after checking Ryan Polling's head, there was a mid-January suspension of three games and some healthy scars. It goes without saying that his Russian agent will be on the show and move on beyond himself in a contract talk.

“I've had a long period without scoring, but I'm probably a bit tired of this,” Tsyplakov said. “I want to help our team score. But I'm trying to do it, so go online and stay online and try to get better with the pack. When you can't do what you want to do, you sometimes have a game. You just want to get better.

“I understand that was my first season. The start is probably a good thing, but it felt a little long without scoring. This is a game. Just a game.”
