Bill Lowering Minimum Rifle Purchase Age Passes FL House Committee

The law lowering the minimum rifle purchase age from 21 to 18 passed the Florida House Committee on Wednesday.

This law, House Bill 759, is sponsored by state lawmakers Michelle Salzmann (R) and Tyler Silloa (R).

The minimum age for purchasing a rifle was raised from 18 to 21 following the shooting at Parkland High School on February 14, 2018, with many Republican lawmakers in the state ready to remove the second amendment limit for ages 18 to 20.

Orlando Weekly Quote American gun owner speaking in favor of HB 759: “As a father, my daughter is under the age of 21 and lives outside my home and can protect herself. [law] Disarm women, disarm college students, disarm children. ”

State Senator Dianna Hart (D) opposed HB 759, saying, “The brain is not developed until he is 25, but he wants to hand over a long 18-year-old gun.”

Hart did not mention that the country would give 18-year-olds signing up for the military with hand-rena bullets, fully automatic rifles and other weapons.

Another Democrat, State Rep. Kelly Skidmore, admitted the weapons offered to the 18-year-old in the military, suggesting that 18-year-olds who buy guns should be trained.

On March 6, 2025, Breitbart News reported that Florida Governor Ron Desantis (R) was urging the repeal of the state's red flag laws.

Desantis also wants to pass the law to allow open carry of handguns.
