The man claiming to be a federal agent fired about 30 rounds into the air outside the Texas Sheriff's Office Saturday morning from an AR-15 rifle. Sheriff's account.
Houston County Sheriff Zach Benge I said The 34-year-old suspect came to the Houston County Sheriff's Office lobby around 7am.
He was arrested for impersonating an officer, illegally carrying weapons by a felon, criminal trespassing and fatal conduct, the sheriff said.
The dispatcher told him that all the deputies were patroling the county so the deputies would return to the sheriff's office, Benge said, adding that the suspect left the lobby and returned to his car.
A moment later, the suspect returned to the lobby carrying the AR-15 rifle, the sheriff added that the suspect was once again hiding under his desk and attempting to call the dispatcher, seeking all the help available.
Benji said the suspect left the lobby and fired about 30 rounds into the air after passing the awning in front of the building. The suspect then reorganized the parking lot and roamed around, the sheriff added.
Soon, two Crockett police officers and a Texas Highway Patrol trooper arrived and faced the suspect.
The suspect was identified as Clifford Hennizer of the Lovelady area – a Colt Pistol and two magazines in his pocket, four more rifle magazines, and 300-500 rounds of rifle ammunition in his truck.
He was arrested for impersonating an officer, illegally carrying weapons by a felon, criminal trespassing and fatal conduct, the sheriff said.
Benge added that Hennither was arrested three days ago (March 12) for disorderly conduct in the lobby of the Houston County Sheriff's Office. Benge Talking to Kytx-TV Hennither used vulgar language with office staff and was released from prison Thursday.
Hennither had been remanded in custody but was to be taken to another county for the safety of Houston County Sheriff's Office staff and Hennither himself, Benge noted.
The Crockett Police Department is leading the case with ATF and FBI assistance, the sheriff said.
