On Sunday, Illinois' Matt Richman became the first American to win the La Marathon since 1994. He ran the course at 2:07:56 and after crossing the finish line he showed off the American flag.
“That's definitely a surprise,” Richman said. “You know, I feel really good. It's really hard to tell where you're going to compete against the competition, but today it's a really good group and I was really happy to run with those guys and win that in the end.”
Richman said he “didn't have much strategy” to get the victory away.
“I wanted to stay in that group, I didn't want to push paces, leads, etc. The whole race I was running with a bit of a fear. It's hard when you don't know what's going on behind you,” he said.
He then thanked the people in Los Angeles who were rooting for him during the race. Richman said he drew inspiration from the atmosphere.
“It's a really great day, you know, 40th On the anniversary (of the race) there are so many legacy runners here, and the crowds here were amazing,” he said. “We had people throughout the course and that really helps. It's amazing how much the crowd can change the course of what you're doing.”
Kenya's Atanas Kioko came in second and finished in 2:10:55. Mose Kiptoo, from Kenya, finished third in the 2:13:13 hour.
