Trump-Putin phone call about ending Ukraine war is underway: White House

President Donald Trump is currently talking to Russian President Vladimir Putin about ending the war in Ukraine, the White House said.

White House spokesman Dan Scavino said the call that began at 10am ET was “going well and still ongoing.” It comes after Trump said last night, “Many elements of the final agreement have been agreed, but many ruins.”

“Thousands of young soldiers, others are killed. It brings about the deaths of 2,500 soldiers every week. It must be over now. It will push the call with Putin very much forward.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday said the two leaders spoke about the war in Ukraine, but according to the Associated Press, there are “many questions” regarding normalizing relations between the US and Russia.

State Department spokesman Tammy Bruce said Monday that “Ball is currently in the Russian court” to accept the US presumed ceasefire contract Ukraine agreed to last week.

The US-backed proposal to ensure a 30-day ceasefire and a reopening of US military aid and intelligence to Ukraine was finalised during diplomatic talks in Saudi Arabia last week.

“Ukraine has expressed preparations to accept the US proposal to enact an immediate 30-day ceasefire against the Russian-Ukraine conflict. The ball is now in the Russian court,” Bruce said at a briefing at the State Department.

The last time Trump and Putin spoke was in mid-February.

“I had a long and very productive call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. We discussed Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, the power of the dollar, and a variety of other subjects,” Trump said.

“We both reflected the great history of our country and the fact that we fought very well in World War II, remembering the loss of tens of millions of people. Trump continued.

“Each of us talked about the strengths of our respective countries and the great benefits we will bring about by working together one day. But first, as we agreed, we want to stop millions of deaths in the war with Russia/Ukraine,” he said.
