House hearing falls apart as Rep. DeLauro challenges DHS Secretary Mullin

House Oversight Hearing Turns Chaotic

A recent House oversight hearing concerning the Department of Homeland Security took an unexpected turn on Thursday. Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.), known for her striking purple hair, vocally confronted Secretary Markwayne Marin, urging the committee chair to “put him in his place.”

Their exchange was heated, with both shouting at each other as House Appropriations and Homeland Security Subcommittee Chairman Mark Amodei (R-Nev.) struggled to maintain control of the situation. At one point, while DeLauro criticized the Trump administration for policies that led to “3,900 children were separated from their families,” Marin interrupted with a pointed remark about the Biden administration, stating, “450,000 children were lost under your administration and you didn’t say anything about it.”

In apparent frustration, DeLauro shouted, “Secretary, secretary, please stay out of the way.” Marin fired back, asserting, “Don’t point your finger at me,” to which DeLauro defiantly replied, “I point at you.”

As tensions escalated, Marin challenged DeLauro’s focus, saying, “Don’t be a hypocrite. We should be just as upset about the 450,000 children we lost.” When DeLauro expressed her anger, Marin retorted, “You didn’t say anything about it. You didn’t say anything for four years.” At this, Amodei attempted to intervene, stating, “Mr. Secretary,” but DeLauro insisted, “Can you please put him in place?”

Amodei, trying to defuse the situation, said to DeLauro, “Well, don’t yell at me,” prompting Marin to add, “You should be put in your place.” Amid the chaos, Amodei finally exclaimed, “We’re going to bring some semblance of order here.” He reminded everyone that not everyone could speak over each other into the microphones.

Despite efforts to restore order, Marin insisted he wouldn’t just sit and listen to what he deemed lies from DeLauro, with her pleading, “Please don’t accuse me of lying.” The back-and-forth continued, as Marin told her, “Then stop it.”

DeLauro expressed her deep concern for children’s welfare, recounting a past visit to the border, where she witnessed distressing conditions. “We are deeply concerned about what is happening to our children,” she said, pointing out the number of separated children.

On the same day, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Trump administration on two significant immigration issues, permitting Homeland Security to turn away asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border and limiting judicial review for ending Temporary Protected Status for certain groups, including around 350,000 Haitians and over 6,100 Syrians.
