MLB news: Red Sox tip hand at Rafael Devers’ position to start season

Boston Red Sox star Rafael Devers had some feathers disrupted when spring training began when he seemed reluctant to give up 3 bases to Alex Bregman, who would make him a better man for the position.

The first reaction was immediately debated between fans and experts, with the main topic being Devers's relationship with Bregman, who Boston signed a three-year, $120 million contract with free agency.

But from the start, it's clear that manager Alex Cora is doing what's best for the Red Sox, and his latest comments on Diver essentially check how the season starts in terms of who plays and where.

Cora told reporters Wednesday that Devers will likely get the game on 3 bases before spring training ends.

Second, Devers may be heading for the first day as Boston's designated full-time batsman.

Red Sox star Raphael creates drama with new teammate Alex Bregman: “The third base is my position”

Devers initially said he was having a conversation with Team Brass and expressed his desire to not be in the role.

“3 base is my position,” Devers said through his interpreter last month. “That's what I played. I don't know what their plans are. I know we had a conversation. I made it clear what my desires were. Yes, no matter what happens from here, I don't know.”

While there's no denying that Devers is confident in all of his baseball abilities, Red Sox is certainly something he loves to their cornerstone, he had a more team-focused answer after his initial comments went viral.

“It's nice to see them do whatever they want to do with me,” Devers told reporters later in spring training. “I'm here. I've already told them about it, and they know where I'm standing. I'm just ready to play.”

Devers is the third baseman of a three-time All-Star, but his indicators (6+ outs above average compared to Bregman's six outs) were by no means the best. He said he was practicing hard in that position, but when Bregman signed it, it seemed the designated batsman was where Devers moved.

However, the first baseman Triston Casas adds fuel to Dever's comments, believing that the third base is where Dever's claims are, and that Bregman should play the second base instead.

However, the Red Sox clearly demonstrate their way of thinking as they head towards their 2025 campaign. They are expected to make the postseason after not doing so in 2024, and Bregman played 3 bases throughout the spring.

Also, Bregman has not yet seen the rep on 2 base.
