Trump suggests law firms 'want to make deals' after rescinding Paul, Weiss order

President Trump defended a series of enforcement actions he took on Friday to target major law firms related to individuals who hold grems.

Trump was asked in his elliptical office how he would respond to critics who claim his actions would be forced.

“Well, law firms want to do all the deals. You mean the law firms we're chasing away, Trump said.

“They're not babies. They're very sophisticated people. These law firms did bad things. Bad things. They've followed me for years,” Trump added.

In recent weeks, the president has signed an order to consider security clearances and government contracts for three law firms.

One Trump order targeted Covington & Burling. It offers a free service to represent former special advisor Jack Smith in his personal abilities. Smith oversaw two federal criminal cases against Trump who was involved in the riots and on January 6, 2021.

Another targeted Perkins Coie, who worked in the Hillary Clinton campaign in 2016, worked for a politically opposition research company that delved into Trump in her first run to the president.

And the third target, Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, the law firm of Wharton & Garrison LLP, Paul and Weiss, called for short. The company employs attorney Mark Pomerantz, who was involved in the Manhattan District Attorney's Office investigation into Trump's finances. After Pomerantz resigned from the DA's office, it brought charges against Trump for the quiet money he made during the course of his 2016 campaign.

Trump was ultimately convicted of 34 counts related to forgerying business records to hide the alleged relationship he denied.

A federal judge temporarily blocked some of Trump's orders, and Perkins refused to let his lawyer enter the federal building.

Trump announced Thursday night that he had withdrawn the order targeting Paul. After Weiss agrees to a set of provisions that are closely aligned with the administration, including providing $40 million worth of pro bono legal services to support the Trump administration's initiatives.
