Small business managers announced that they would cut employment by around 2,700 people. This accounts for around 43% of the workforce as part of the agency restructuring.
Founded in 1953 to provide resources to small businesses and help manage disaster recovery loans, SBA said cutting the 6,500-person workforce is part of an effort to return to pre-pandemic staffing levels.
SBA leader Kelly Loeffler said Friday that the agency is “focusing on ending the previous administration's vast social policy agenda, eliminating non-essential roles and returning to pre-pandemic staffing levels.

“By removing uncritical positions and integrating functions, we will return to the last Trump administration staffing level,” Loeffler said in a statement.
The SBA said it would ensure that loan guarantees and disaster assistance programs, as well as the sector and veteran businesses, are not affected. The cuts in staff include voluntary resignation, expiration of the Covid era, and appointments for other periods, and several job openings.
“Today, the SBA announces a 43% workforce cut and right-sizing agents to pre-pandemic staffing levels,” Loeffler writes in X.

President Donald Trump separately announced on Friday that the SBA will take more responsibility, saying the institution will process student loans as part of a plan to shift responsibility from the Department of Education.

The SBA “is ready to work with Congress and the administration to bring accountability back to the American student loan program,” Loeffler replied with X.
