LA restaurant hit with backlash after owner says something positive about Tesla

The co-owner of Los Angeles' acclaimed French bistro has put the restaurant in hot water on social media after celebrating billionaire Elon Musk's electric car company Tesla.

Walter Manske, a veteran chef and co-owner of LA's Republique, praised the idea behind the new Tesla-owned restaurant, which features a Tesla charging station in a recent New York Times interview released Friday, and critics ripped his facility on online forum site reddit.com.

“It sounds exciting,” Manzuke told the outlet, adding that his wife, who co-owns Republique, said “I said I wanted to buy a Tesla the other day, so I can tell you what side she is on.”

That one quote prompted a massive flood of angry Reddit comments. Some said they would eat elsewhere because of Manzuke's words. “Thanks to Link. Rather than lying, this is terrible, but there are many other great places in the city.”

Another declaration: “Easy Boycott.”

One claimed that Protesla's comments amounted to “business suicide.”

“In rare cases, we see local restaurateurs commit business suicides in such public ways,” they said.

The backlash was important enough for République's management to clarify and respond to Manzke's quote.

A restaurant post published on Instagram on Saturday Accounts listed“In response to a recent New York Times article, I want to make it clear that the quote that you might buy a Tesla is not a political statement, but rather an exploration of electric vehicle options. We value innovation and sustainability and respect all perspectives.

Representatives from the French restaurant did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.
