Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velazquez has been sentenced to five years in a 2022 shooting that injured one man.
Velazquez was a prolific UFC champion who knocked off legendary enemy Brock Lesnar for the belt in 2010. His final battle was in 2019.
The former fighter now has not admitted any contest before Santa Clara, California over attempted murder or other charges related to the shooting.
NBC Bay Area It has been reported Velazquez's lawyers had only requested probation, but the judge denied the request. However, the 42-year-old is likely to serve just a year after earning his time in prison and his achievements in home confinement.
The Santa Clara County District Attorney had offered a life sentence of 30 years.
Velazquez alleged that Harry Goallete abused Velazquez's son while attending a childcare center run by Patricia Goallete, the mother of Goallete, who runs daycare from her home in San Martin, California, and his stepfather, Paul Bender.
