“The Homestead Act needs to increase, not the sales tax that applies to everyone,” Boyd said.
Caldwell said the original Homestead Act, passed in 1934, brought about $5,000 in profits when the average home only cost around $4,500. He says the Homestead exemption has not been renewed.
“Even today, there's a $50,000 homestead in an average home that averages $350,000 or $450,000, so it's not the same advantage as when he originally died,” Caldwell said.
He is seeking a significant increase to save homeowners money.
“We need to go at least from the current $50,000 to $100,000 or $120,000,” Caldwell said.
That's an issue that will ultimately require voters to vote in 2026.
