California officials said Wednesday that a veteran Army police officer was killed when a shootout saw potential drugs penetrate illegal drugs in operational crackdowns.

Yuba County District Attorney Clint Curry said at a press conference Wednesday afternoon that several law enforcement agencies have launched 20 search warrants across Yuba, Sutter, Tehama and Butte counties as a result of a multi-year investigation into the trafficking of methamphetamine and fentanyl.

Yuba County Sheriff Wendell Anderson said officers at the Marysville Police Department were injured during the exchange of a shootout between law enforcement and people within the interior affairs department. The officer was taken to Adventist Health and Rideout Hospital and later died of injuries.

“Obviously, this tragedy has shaken our small community,” Anderson said.

A California deputy crashed, causing two people to split a police cruiser during the pursuit.

The gunman was shot and killed, Anderson said. A second individual is inside the house and is currently considered a witness, Curry said.

The sheriff said the gunman had died at the scene and there was another person in the house where Da Curry said he was considered an eyewitness at this point.

Curry said that hundreds of pounds of different drugs, including methamphetamine and fentanyl, were seized before law enforcement began a search warrant.

“These were key players running through our community,” he said. “And we just couldn't sit down and see it happen. We had to do something about it. And it's just tragic and we'll all ask you to pray for the officer's family and this law enforcement community that is still grieving today.”
