Canadian PM Mark Carney Brands Trump’s Auto Tariffs as ‘A Bold Assault’

Canadian PM Mark Carney calls Trump's new auto tariffs 'a direct attack'

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded strongly to President Trump’s recently introduced 25% tariffs on automobile imports from abroad, labeling it a “direct assault” on Canadian employees and asserting that the US’s northern neighbors will eventually “come out stronger.”

“This is a direct assault, and to clarify, it’s a direct assault on the very worker I was speaking to this morning, whom I stood before at the Ambassador Bridge, a symbol and a bridge of truth in the challenging relationship between our two nations.

“We safeguard our workforce. We safeguard our businesses,” he continued. “We defend our nation and we will protect it collectively.”

Trump announced on Wednesday that a new 25% tariff would apply to “all vehicles not manufactured in the US” and will take effect on April 2. Trump stated that parts would not incur the tax.

“I believe that most of the time you’ll find the car in one location,” Trump told reporters on Wednesday.

The president contended that new tariffs promote auto manufacturers to relocate production to the US, which would result in job increases in the long run. In the short term, tariffs might significantly elevate car prices, and manufacturers will raise the costs of sourcing parts for assembly.

Over the previous “months,” Carney noted, Canadians have “overcome the shock of betrayal and absorbed lessons. We need to depend on ourselves, so we must rely on one another and collaborate.”

For an extended period, Trump has been predicting the initiation of reciprocal tariffs on nations that are currently imposing duties on goods from the US starting April 2nd.

Carney indicated on Wednesday that, apart from Canada’s own retaliatory tariffs, the government has permitted businesses to defer tax payments, allowing them adequate flexibility to adapt effectively to the intensification of the trade conflict.

“We have established large facilities for substantial businesses, and some companies that could be impacted by this may be affected in various ways to secure liquidity.”

Trump’s new tariffs on vehicles and trucks entering the US market have garnered support from the United Autoworkers (UAW) Union, a labor organization that acknowledged former Vice President Harris in the 2024 presidential race.

“Overall, the UAW and the working class aren’t overly concerned with party politics. Workers anticipate that leaders will unite to achieve results. The UAW has made its position clear. We collaborate with politicians who are willing to reverse decades of neglect towards working-class citizens during the most lucrative era in our nation’s history.” statement on Wednesday.

“These tariffs represent a significant move in the right direction for autoworkers and blue-collar communities nationwide and are now accessible for automakers from the Big 3 to Volkswagen and beyond, helping us restore solid union jobs in the US,” Fein added.
