NFL ‘nose wipe’ ban sparks questions over gang affiliation

The NFL updated its list of banned gestures in a report sent to all teams disrupting the “nose wipe” celebration, which includes many fans.

The league sent new rules to all 32 teams, including a “banned conduct” list under the Sportsmanlike conduct section, as reported by ESPN analyst Benjamin Solak.

“According to the full rules report sent to the NFL team this week, the “nose wipe” celebration became a 15-yard penalty for being a “violent gesture,” Solak wrote on X in a Rulebook screenshot.

In addition to stating that players would follow “generally understood principles of sportsmanship,” the league included certain other acts that were considered “violent” gestures.

“Throat slashes, simulations of gun firing or swinging, or using “nose wipes” gestures, or sexually suggestive or offensive behavior” are all great crimes, the league writes.

The NFL is also being celebratory fines like “Crotch Grab,” an orde to former player Marshawn Lynch, which was also made by top stars like Patrick Mahomes, who received a fine for gestures last season.

The inclusion of a “nose wipe” gesture caused the fans to scratch their heads. Fans scratched their heads, especially considering it became a celebration of Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Ceedeelam's signature.

The Lamb shared Sorak Report and Added That he had other celebrations in mind for what could certainly be considered a violent gesture. The Cowboy then shared a clip of him Celebration After the catch.

What does that mean?

Several reports have shown that the gesture does not have a harmless origin that may have finger guns, or perhaps shoes of different colours (another fine crime).

According to NBC Sports A story about professional footballnose wipes are blood-related gangster signs, indicating that someone cannot trust them.

Baltimore Sun It has been reported Similarly, in 2019, someone who wipes the tip of his nose with his index finger said that bloody members could mean “I don't trust him.”

Similarly, Virginia Police Intelligence Report Regarding Bloods in 2008, I listed a rub of my nose showing that he had no weapons and wiping his face to identify police, but nothing particularly about wiping the nose.

The term has been used by rappers for at least 10 years, some of which claim gang affiliation. However, it is impossible to convey the specific meaning of rum behind the celebrations he reportedly used since joining the NFL in 2020.

This is not the first time the league has paid a fine for seemingly inexplicable reasons. The NFL flip-flops multiple times on what appears to be inappropriate.

Specifically, the giant red kettle, a novel Christmas decoration for the charity The Salvation Army, was occasionally fined when players jumped in. Additionally, players who made the same celebration jump were not awarded a fine.

Mixed messaging accused the Cincinnati Bengals of baiting the league by running through Chase Brown, which led them back.

In total, the NFL fined nearly $12.5 million in 2024. This is significantly more than 2021 ($7.1 million), but significantly less than 2019 ($27.8 million).
