Almost 3 in 4 expect higher prices after Trump tariffs take effect: Survey

The majority of Americans said in a new survey they are hoping for a higher price for President Trump, the global tariff president that came into full force on Wednesday.

In a three-day opinion poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos Last weekend, 73% of Americans said prices will rise over the next six months for “items you buy every day.”

Similar stocks of respondents say the same thing about a variety of specific products. 77% are expected to have higher prices for electronics and mobile phones, with 73% of cars, 72% of household goods, 70% of fresh produce, 62% of home repairs and improvements, and 56% of dairy products such as milk and cheese.

Respondents were told that tariffs on at least 10% of goods imported into the US would be enforced over the weekend, and asked for each category listed, “Is your expenses not personally increasing, decreasing or changing at all?”

Most respondents on the political spectrum said they expect prices to rise in most categories, but that more Democrats and independents are hoping for higher prices than Republicans.

A slim majority (56%) of Republicans expect the prices of “items you buy every day” to rise, but 89% of Democrats and 78% of independents held this view.

Two-thirds of Republicans expect high prices for electronics and phones, while 62% expect high prices for cars, 60% expect high prices for home appliances, and 53% expect high prices for fresh produce.

Half of Republicans, under 43% and under 43%, expect home repairs to be higher, while a third expects 33% to be higher on dairy products.

Trump has recently defended tariffs despite stock markets causing consecutive losses and countries retaliating with US import duties.

“Be cool! Everything will be fine. America will be bigger and better than ever!” Trump wrote on Truth Social Wednesday.

The vote took place from Friday to Sunday, and included 1,027 respondents. The margin of error is 3.2% points.
