Schiff: 'If we head into a recession, it will be the Trump recession'

Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif) said Trump is “destroying the economy,” adding that when the US heads into a recession, it will become known as the “Trump Recession.”

When he appeared on NBC News' “Meet the Press,” Schiff was asked by host Kristen Welker about Trump's assurance that his global tariffs would create a “economic revolution.”

“I don't agree with that part,” he said of Trump's statement. “Unfortunately, he's destroying our economy.”

“I hope we'll move away from the recession,” he added. “But when we head towards a recession, it's Trump's recession.”

Schiff also said images of Trump Golf would “people burned their retirement savings” and “the most lasting image of President Trump.”

“This is a completely self-destructive economic act he is engaged in,” Schiff continued. “And it's not just tariffs. It's also the freeze on funds, the layoffs of people, the marginalization of our allies in California. I've heard from farmers who haven't yet recovered market share from tariffs during the first Trump administration.”

He noted that tourism and small businesses are also hits.

“I've heard from people in the tourism industry,” he said. “There are people from other countries who don't want to come here right now, especially Canadians.”

“We've heard from other small business people who say, 'Don't send any more of your products, in fact, I'm going to send you back what you've already sent.” What really hurts people is the whole scope of Trump's economic policy,” he added.

Schiff's criticism comes after Trump announced a general 10% tariff on goods imported into the US last week, followed by other target tariffs for various US trading partners. The market plunged sharply after Trump's announcement. On Friday, the Dow Jones Industrial Arage dropped 2,200 points, while the S&P 500 lost 10% in two days.
