The New Jersey councillor and high-ranking Lucchese crime families are among dozens of people plagued by a massive, munched gambling ring that allegedly ran out of Garden State restaurants, officials announced Friday.
Prospect Park Councillor Anandshire, 42, is said to have managed illegal poker games and the illegal poker games that New Jersey Attorney General Matthew Platkin allegedly claimed at a Newark press conference Friday morning.
“We are keenly aware of the public's perception of elected officials in New Jersey and the lack of trust that many have in civil servants and government agencies,” says Platkin. “The arrest of a city council member simply adds fuel to the fire.”
Sher was one of 37 people arrested, claiming that 39 had won illegal profits, part of a two-year investigation that discovered illegal operations in Woodland Park, Garfield and Totowa.
Officials allegedly said George Zappora, 65, of Red Bank, who was part of Lucchese's control panel.
Beneath him was Joseph “Big Joe” Perna, 56, the captain of Lucchese in Belleville.
On Wednesday, officers stormed four illegal poker clubs connected to the Lucchese family, two of which ran out of rooms at the back of the restaurant. They also searched Patterson's business, which houses the seven people who managed the gambling machines and gambling business.
The raid has led officials to host more poker clubs and poker games, discover dozens of people who have worked at clubs and managed bettors in illegal online sportsbooks, says Platkin.
“It was a highly structured, highly profitable criminal enterprise run by people who thought they were beyond the law,” said Teresa Hilton, director of the Criminal Justice Department.
Shah is charged with assault and conspiracy to promote gambling, money laundering and other charges that could be face-to-face in prison for up to 20 years if convicted of the highest crime.
He has not been accused of using his office to carry out suspicious crimes, nor has he been a member of the Mafia, but officials have argued that he is, rather, a companion.
He is scheduled for Tuesday in Morris County Courthouse, with prosecutors claiming he is in jail while his case is unfolding.
Shah did not immediately return an email request for comment. Attorneys for Zapora, Cross and John Perna did not immediately return requests for comment. It was not immediately clear who represented Joe Perna.
