Americans impacted by 2024 natural disasters may qualify for extension to file taxes – NPR

If you are affected by a disaster in 2024, you will be eligible for an automatic extension to file taxes, according to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Usually, most Americans need to file their taxes by April 15th. However, taxpayers in the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) area Disaster declaration The deadline has been extended until May 1st, and there will be another two weeks to submit.

Due to the devastating hurricane that destroyed much of the southeast last year, filers from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina are guaranteed to extend this deadline. This applies to many counties as well. Tennessee and Virginia.

Additionally, victims of Los Angeles’ catastrophic wildfires earlier this year will be required to file tax documents until October 15th. Some filers in Alaska and New Mexico are also eligible for extensions.

Even for the most challenging housing accountants, tax day can be daunting. A slow filer can be subject to severe penalties, and returns submitted incorrectly can cause an IRS audit.
