Former President Obama dismissed what Harvard University referred to as a “clumsy” request from President Trump’s administration on Monday.
“Harvard has provided a blueprint for other higher education institutions. While rejecting unlawful clumsy efforts to undermine academic freedom, we are taking tangible actions to ensure that every Harvard student can experience an environment of intellectual inquiry, robust discourse, and mutual respect,” Obama stated. I mentioned in a post on social platform x.
The former president, who earned his law degree from Harvard in 1991, added to his post: “I hope more institutions will emulate this.”
Last week, the Trump administration requested modifications to various policies, including those concerning protests and diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, to ensure that Harvard retains federal funding. On Monday, the university rejected this demand.
“A government in power ought not to dictate what private universities can teach, who can be recognized and employed, and which fields of study and research can be pursued,” Harvard University’s Alan Garber stated in a message on Monday to the Harvard community.
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) expressed his support for Harvard in a post on X on Monday.
“Kudos to Harvard for refusing to compromise Trump’s constitutional rights to authoritarianism. Other universities should take note, and rather than providing free services for Trump, law firms should defend those who uphold the rule of law,” Sanders remarked in his post.
On Tuesday, Trump intensified the dispute by suggesting the possibility of revoking Harvard’s tax-exempt status.
“Maybe Harvard has forfeited its tax-exempt status due to political, ideological, and terrorist influences, and if you continue to advocate for supporting this insurgency, you should be taxed as a political organization,” he commented on his truth social platform. “Keep in mind that tax-exempt status is entirely dependent on actions serving the public interest!”
White House spokesperson Harrison Fields conveyed in an email statement to The Hill that the president is “focused on ending unaddressed anti-Semitism and revitalizing higher education by ensuring that taxpayer funds do not support Harvard’s dangerous racism and racially motivated violence.”
“An institution that wants to violate Harvard or Title VI is by law ineligible for federal funding,” Fields concluded.
