The gunman appears to have targeted passengers outside a hookah lounge in Philadelphia, showing intrusive security footage of the moment an Uber driver was killed.
Olatunji W. Bolaji, 77, was seen picking up a 22-year-old passenger outside of Black Chevrolet, outside Philadelphia, outside Byblos Ghohah Bar, around 2am Wednesday. NBC10.
The unidentified fare hugged a woman outside of Boraj’s car as two men leapt out of the Jeep’s Grand Cherokee on a Massachusetts plate, police said.
The woman is seen fleeing for safety as she finds the suspect rushing towards them with a gun pointing to the passenger.
The rider then jumps into the SUV as the man surrounds him from the front and back of the vehicle.
One of the suspects fired his gun at the vehicle, attacking Boraj in his head, hitting passengers in his arms, legs and abdomen, police told the exit.
Despite being shot in the head, Boraj managed to escape, but eventually crashed into a light pole a block away.
He was declared dead at the scene.
Police took passengers to Jefferson University Hospital in danger.
Prime Minister Scott Small said CBS News There was a “definitely a physical altercation” between the suspect and the passenger before Boraj came to pick up the rider.
The suspect has not been identified yet and remains on a large scale.
Police said detectives are investigating the shooting and are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the shooter’s arrest and conviction.
A neighbor who lived next to Boraj for seven years described him as a quiet, respectful, hardworking and friendly man from his family. He leaves behind a son and partner.
He said the driver loves to work for Uber and his family is distraught with his murder.
“In the wake of this devastating loss, our hearts are broken for the driver’s family and loved ones,” Uber said in a statement to NBC10.
“We are working to bring the person responsible for this violent act of violence to justice, so we reached out to the police to provide our support.”
According to statistics provided by the city since its inception in 2025, there have been 58 murders Philadelphia Police Station. In 2024 there were 81 murders in Philadelphia.
The city also experienced 446 shootings this year, with 239 casualties as of April 17th.
In 2024, the city had a total of 635 shootings, with 296 casualties.
