South Africa Publishes Steep Race Quotas for Jobs, Fines for Non-Compliance

South Africa’s Ministry of Labor and Employment this week announced a series of racial allocations that apply strict rules to 18 different industries and threaten businesses with sudden fines if they fail to comply.

The law applies to businesses that employ more than 50 people and require the workforce to reflect the country’s demographics at all levels.

These employees include blacks (African, coloured, Indian), women and diables [sic] laborer.

It is stipulated that companies implement a structure in which there is more than 90% of the 15 sectors “designated groups” (female and non-white people) in 15 of the 18 sectors. Of the 18 sectors, there are over 95% designated group targets for 11 skilled technical brackets.

South Africa’s National Association of Employers and Sakeriga have said that the rules are “unconstitutional, illegal and harmful” and that they will take the government to court.

The Trump administration has cut off assistance to South Africa for what the US government says is abuse of white South Africans, particularly Africans and farmers, who have offered asylum.

President Donald Trump said earlier this month: “They’re having some bad things happening in South Africa. … A lot of bad things happening in South Africa. The fake news should be watching it. They don’t want to report it.”
