Lando Norris ‘confident’ but not ‘comfortable’ after FP2 at Saudi Arabian Grand Prix

Randorris cut his teammate Oscar Piastri by 0.163 seconds by breaking through the timing sheet in his second practice session on Friday ahead of the Formula 1 Saudi Arabia Grand Prix. Norris finished P2 in his first practice session, just 0.007 seconds behind Pierre Guthrie, but the second session is more representative of what he expects from the qualifying round and the Grand Prix on Sunday, given the nightly start.

After the session, Norris admitted he was “confident”, but not “comfortable” given the competitive nature of the field.

“I think we’re confident, but the others aren’t that late,” Norris said.

“We probably wanted a bigger gap than what we do today. We know we have a fast car. We know we have a great car, but it’s not as comfortable and not as comfortable as we want.

Max Verstappen, Max Verstappen, is the Drivers champion and placed third in FP2.

“This is so fast, I always feel that it’s been a chaotic around here. There are a lot of walls, a lot of proximity,” Norris added.

“I think today was probably a day when I was working on my driving and working on myself rather than trying to work in a car, and I got a good start to the weekend, productive, self-confidence and gained emotion.

On his part, Piastri described the session as “rationally comfortable”, but noted that he and McLaren have some things to “iron out” ahead of qualifying.

“It was a decent day. I think the pace was good, and Piastri said, who has won two wins so far this season.

“There were some corners that I needed to try and do a little better work tomorrow, but everything felt like a good day, and I think the pace was good.

McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella explained that the team’s “positive” first day was the team’s Saudi Arabia on Friday.

“Here in Jeddah, we have completed many important test items and established a reasonable performance baseline,” he said in a report after the team. “We completed quite a few laps to help the driver build confidence, which is especially important on this fast but technically challenging circuit.

“With this, the field seems very solidly packed and we need to extract the greatest potential from the car for qualifying. We have a lot of data to analyze tonight and look forward to getting back on track tomorrow.”
