Man arrested in hate crime attack on Jewish college students in Chicago

The Illinois man was charged with violent hate crime attacks against two Jewish students at DePaul University last year.

Adam Elkan, 20, faces four felony charges, including two counts of hate crimes and two counts of aggravated battery.

Prosecutors allege that Elkan attacked Max Long and Michael Kaminski while Elkan peacefully defended Israel on the DePaul University campus in Chicago on November 6th. Authorities also said they were looking for a second suspect.

Police say Elkan, who was not a university student, has been reportedly approaching for a long time while covering her face and slandering anti-Semitism. The second suspect then attacked from behind for a long time, eventually turning Kaminski on as he tried to intervene in help, police said.

The Cook County Prosecutor’s Office and the Chicago Police Department did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

According to prosecutors, Elkan’s father identified him to police after surveillance footage captured Elkan, who escaped from the scene in a 2011 Silver Toyota RAV-4.

Authorities have been able to obtain video footage of the incident, and police are still searching for a second suspect.

Fox News Digital could not find an attorney to represent Erkan.

Long, a resident of the Israeli Defense Force, lost consciousness and suffered brain damage from the attack, but Kaminsky broke his wrist and required surgery.

“It definitely feels a sense of relief to some degree,” Long said, “I’ve said many times, I felt safer in the support of my team in the military around me in Gaza than I’ve done it on my university campus in Chicago.”

Elkan was arrested outside his home earlier this week and made his first appearance in court on Thursday. The judge ordered Elkan to be held without bail while awaiting trial.

“We are extremely grateful for the police work that investigated this incident and arrested the suspect,” a DePaul University official said in a statement in Fox News Digital. “The suspect is not a member of the DePaul community. The acts of hatred and violence have no place in DePaul. We condemn anti-Semitism in all of its forms and stand in solidarity with those affected by this accused conduct.”

Earlier this month, Long and Kaminsky filed a lawsuit along with a legal project against DePaul University, alleging that authorities allowed anti-Semitic rhetoric to break into campus.

“We appreciate the work that Chicago Police did to identify and arrest this suspect, and we hope that the state attorney will prosecute this as a conspiracy and a hate crime attack.”

“We have all the confidence that the second attacker will be arrested soon. As the judge revealed at yesterday’s hearing, the evidence shows a plan to attack Max and Michael and its systematic implementation.
