Iowa Gov. Signs Bill Allowing 18-Year-Olds to Buy, Carry Handguns

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) signed a law on Friday that changes state law to allow 18-year-old handguns to be owned and carried.

Des Moines registration It has been reported State Sen. Stephen Holt (R) has gathered fellow lawmakers to support the bill, House File 924.

Holt said, “I joined the Marines at the age of 18 and graduated from bootcamp at the age of 18. I carried firearms in the military and was ready to defend the country with hundreds of thousands of other young men and women at the age of 18.”

He added:

State Sen. Art Staad (d) opposed the law while in the Senate, claiming that “lowering the age of buying a handgun will not save a life.”

He claimed he would allow an 18-year-old child to carry “to take his life” in self-defense, saying, “Let’s keep this common sense in Iowa. Let’s make him 21.”
