The Rangers lost season told in three key, concerning statistics

Rangers who go to the borderline side show from the winner of the president’s trophy were a good cause of concern this season.

However, the level of concern is amplified when evaluating On-ICE analysis, which is completely separate from everything else considered in this lost 2024-25 campaign.

So, to restore Blueshirts as a Stanley Cup contender, you can draw a great picture of what President and General Manager Chris Drury has to do this offseason.

In the post, Molly Walker identifies three statistics that are most concerned about seasonal statistics.

1.17.6 Power Play Rate

He finished the season in the NHL in 28th place, and the Rangers power play was surprisingly bad. In recent years, we’ve seen players stand out who automatically found the net struggle to hold their zone, considering how important it is to team success.

Power plays became increasingly predictable for opponents over the years, but there was rarely a threat to the score.

The fact that they portrayed an eighth power play opportunity (210) is evidence that the Rangers had very few pucks during their 5-for-5 play. The seven shorthanded goals they gave up were tied fourth in the league.

After such small personnel had moved over the past few years, manager Peter Laviolet tried to make that happen by making some changes to both units during the season. Still, the top units were almost always started.

Furthermore, of the seven 5V3 opportunities they acquired, the Rangers only took advantage of two of them.

2. 5 or more goals allowed 23 amazing times

Regarding the number of people out there, the Rangers allowed more than five goals in about 28.05% of their 82-game season. There are a few other statistics explaining why this is, but only those who have looked closely at the Bluesshirt this season know that they don’t tell the whole story.

The Rangers have sat in the face of adversity this season. No, they folded. If one thing was wrong, so many games got out of hand, as the whole team would simply shut down. They lost their resilience and as a result, the scores appeared on them several times.

Tied to the fifth shot per game (29.9), the Rangers finished the season with the fifth highest predicted goal per 60 (2.75).

3. Last season’s top six goals — Artemi Panarin, Vincent Trokek, Adam Fox, Micah Zibanejad and Alexis Raffeniere — finished with at least 10 points less.

Zibanejad may only have 72 to 62 points, but the Swedish centre took a dramatic DIP defensively and was one of the team’s most effective skaters for a good portion of the season. Fox may only have 12 points DIP in two more games, but their top two-way defender didn’t score his first non-blank goal until January 9th, and it hasn’t been the same since a knee injury from 2023-24.

The most dramatic drop-off belonged to Kreider, who recorded 45 points less points this season in 14 games less due to injuries and one healthy scratch. He recorded just three major assists and five five five goals.

Trocheck experienced an 18-point regression, and after seven years of signing, Lafrenière went from 57 to 45 points after signing a contract extension of $52.15 million. The Rangers needed more from Trokek, who didn’t play with a bite that made the club want to sign him in the first place.

The 12-point difference in Lafrenière’s past two seasons may not seem that great, but everyone in the first 2020 has almost disappeared after signing the extension on October 25th.

Panalyn was the key producer of the Rangers’ sixth straight season, but now only 89 from his 120-point career.
