Padres-designated batsman Luis Arez was placed on the stretcher and had to be carried out from the field after colliding with Astros’ second base man Mauricio Dubon, who was covering the second base at the top of his first bunt attempt.
Arraez was able to move his limbs, but the nature of his injury was not immediately clean.
In a statement from the Padres, the team said Ares was taken to Houston Methodist Hospital for evaluation.
“He’s currently stable, conscious, responsive and able to move his limbs,” the team said.
The incident of concern came after Arez slowly charged the bunt.
The Astros’ first base hand Christian Walker played the ball and flipped over to Dubon, but when Houston’s two base hand stepped on the bag, he appeared to reach Arez’s path, and the two quickly crumpled to the ground.
San Diego’s base coach Dave Macias quickly went to Ares to check him out, as well as Dubon, before the Padres trainer came out of the dugout to assess the situation.
A slow motion replay of the play showed that Arraez’s head had contact with Dubón’s forearm.
Several Padres players came to where Alleyes had dropped and went to their knees, and Dubon stayed by his side until he was carried off the field.
As he was being taken from the field, Alez looked like he was giving a thumbs up.
The game was delayed by 15 minutes due to injuries.
Arraez took part in Sunday’s game and had a batting average of .287, three home runs and seven RBIs in the season.
