Judge temporarily blocks NYC Mayor Adams from reopening ICE office on Rikers Island

Mayor Eric Adams was temporarily blocked Monday from taking steps to allow federal immigration officials to return on Rikers Island.

Manhattan Judge Mary Rosado issued a temporary restraining order at the request of the city council. The city council appealed to prevent ice and other federal law enforcement from establishing shops in problematic prisons.

“City Hall and all other New York City Government officials, officers, personnel and agencies are prohibited from taking steps towards negotiating, signing or adopting a memorandum of understanding with the federal government regarding the existence of federal law enforcement regarding the Department of Corrections’ property,” Rosado wrote.

The order is in place until at least Friday morning until both parties argue the case in court.

Agents only work on criminal cases and do not carry out civil enforcement in prisons.

The council said that by allowing the ice to return to Riker, it will open the locks for mass deportation in the lockup.

ICE used to have Riker’s offices, but in 2014, Sanctuary City law passed under then Mayor de Blasio and was removed.
