Israel-related antisemitism drives record numbers in ADL’s 2024 audit

The Prevention Prevention League (ADL) identified 9,354 anti-Semitism cases in 2024, up 5% from 2023 and 926% since it began tracking in 1979.

According to ADL’s calculations in the annual anti-Semitism audit, there were over 25 “target anti-Semites incidents” per day in 2024, with more than one per hour. In its audit, ADL detailed the types of recorded anti-Semitism cases: 196 assaults (up 21% since 2023), 2,606 vandalism (up 20% since 2023), and 6,552 cases of harassment (up 6,535 in 2023).

This is the fourth consecutive year that the number of anti-Semitism incidents across the country has broken previous records. The ADL characterized this as part of the “continuous octo and seven spikes” in anti-Semitism.

“Let’s be clear, anti-Semitism is an irrational hatred of individuals and institutions simply because they are Jews,” ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt told Fox News Digital. He later said, “ADL has been conducting annual audits of anti-Semitism cases since the 1970s, and we have never seen numbers like this.”

Israeli officials warn of the growth of anti-Semitic “tsunami”

In the release of the report, Greenblatt denounced the “terrifying level of anti-Semitism” seen across the country, saying it became a “stricken reality for the American Jewish community.”

Greenblatt told Fox News Digital that the audit shows American Jews working “on a daily basis.” He admits that American Jews work and work in school, just like their non-Jewish neighbors do, but they fear that “thing can connect them.”

For the first time, the ADL found that the majority of anti-Semitism cases (58%, or 5,452 outbreaks) were related to Israel or Zionism. Most of these cases, 2,596, took place at anti-Israel rallies, including anti-Semitic speeches, chants and slogans. However, in an audit, ADL revealed that “anti-Semitic expressions” at the assembly were counted as a single incident, regardless of repetition. Of the over 5,000 rallies tracked, about half included anti-Semitic expressions, with those not excluded from the audit.

The ADL said “The Palestinian Justice Students (SJP) and the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) are the two most active organizers or co-sponsors of protests that have occurred with anti-Semitic incidents.”

Anti-Semitic activity, especially on university campuses, has skyrocketed. The ADL said it found an 84% increase in anti-Semitism incidents reported on American university campuses. According to its audit, the organization recorded 1,694 anti-Semitism cases on university campuses in 2024.

“Campus incidents consist of 18% of all incidents, a larger percentage than previous audits,” ADL wrote in an audit’s press release.

The organisation said it was cautious when writing audits to prevent the Israeli government from blending criticism with anti-Semitism.

“If you’re looking for a raucous, robust discussion about what’s going on in non-anti-Semitic Israel, let me point out Israel,” Greenblatt told Fox News Digital. “Look at the Israeli press, look at the Jewish press, look at the Jewish organizations, from synagogues to schools.

However, some of the anti-Israel rallies, including anti-Semitic expressions, included celebrations of the October 7th massacre in Hamas, in which 1,200 Israelis were slaughtered and 251 hostages were taken.

While audits may seem like “destiny and darkness,” ADL is Senior Vice President of Anti-toxicity and Intelligence, and Oren Segall encourages Americans to see it as a blueprint for the future.

“It’s not just a data point to do nothing for the remaining 364 days of release, but it’s actually a blueprint, a guide to focusing on advocacy, research, and our work in general,” Segal told Fox News Digital. He also said the report was about “making what is often invisible and finding ways to tackle it.”
