Hard hat Laborers’ Union backs Andrew Cuomo for NYC mayor

Andrew Cuomo won the support of another important hard hat on Tuesday in the New York City mayor’s race and earned the United Nations support of workers.

The New York State Labor Union affiliate represents 40,000 members of New York State, further highlighting the former governor’s support in construction transactions.

The union is the 2021 mayoral race and supported Cuomo’s rival in the June Democratic primary election, former mayor Scott Stringer.

“New York City is the world’s cultural, economic and social engine, and leading it requires vision, grit and proven experience,” said Donato Bianco Jr., Vice President of Riuna.

“When it comes to change, you need someone who can anticipate challenges, make tough decisions, and adapt with courage and conviction. Andrew Cuomo has done it before and he is ready to do it again,” Bianco said.

“A record of deep love for the city, a record of true outcomes for working men and women, and a record of strength to lead in uncertain times, Andrew Cuomo is a clear choice for the mayor. He has earned our full support.”

The union cited records of improving Cuomo buildings and infrastructure over his decade as governor. We particularly noted that the first round of the Second Avenue subway, Moynihan Train Hall at Penn Station, LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy Airport transformations have been completed.

Workers build and repair highways and roads, bridges and office towers, schools and airports. Dig tunnels, lay down subways and sewers, removing asbestos and other hazards.

“Workers are the definition of “New York Tough.” They bring true grit to the job, and they do their job well. Whether it’s rebuilding our subways, digging into tunnels, repairing roads, or building our bridges, their contributions show why organized workers must be part of the solution,” Cuomo said.

“As governor, I have confirmed that they received a tough day’s salary for a tough day’s work. As mayor, I will make sure they can hear their voices in projects that will get their great city work done.”

The 67-year-old Cuomo has emerged as the forefront of the mayor’s Democratic primary despite resigning as governor in 2021 amid accusations of sexual misconduct he denied, according to polls.

He has won the most union support despite facing a torrent of criticism from his mayoral rivals and others, despite facing harassment accusations and handling of the Covid-19 pandemic in nursing homes.

House Republicans urged the Trump Justice Department to indict Cuomo by making “criminally false statements” to Congress about his role in the Covid-related deaths of low-attack nurse residents during the pandemic.

He dismissed the introduction as a partisan hit work.

The former governor previously secured support from iron workers and unions representing operational engineers, carpenters and painters. The local 32BJ SEIU, Hotel and Gaming Trade Council, and the association representing paramedics, EMT and Teamsters is 237.
