British Columbia news media is in mourning as a result of the death of Diane Newman, a trusted voice on local radio waves for over 20 years.
Newman has passed away April 1st At Vancouver General Hospital. She was 69 years old.
No official cause of death is provided.
Newman’s obituary describes her last days as characterising courage and grace.
After receiving a quick diagnosis of terminal condition, she decided that her family would die peacefully, rather than extend what they called “desperate situations.”
The veteran journalist was known for her calm presence and clear, nonsense delivery for nearly 20 years at CKWX. It was previously known as News1130, including 15 years as the prominent voice of News Radio at the morning and noon.
She helped launch the station’s entirely new format in 1996, and quickly became a familiar name to listeners in British Columbia.
Before his appearance in Vancouver Media, Newman began his career at Mountain FM, covering the Scumish and Whistler regions.
She later joined the 1040 kick in Vancouver and continued to hone her craft as a broadcasting station.
Her work was defined by intellectual rigor, warmth and an uneasy commitment to clear and impartial reporting.
“She was a shining light and a mentor,” said her former colleague.
“Serious, talented and loved what she did.”
Outside the studio, Newman’s voice reached even more.
For the past 13 years, she has served as a narrator of descriptive video works, providing visually impaired people with detailed and accessible descriptions of films and television shows.
Her colleagues praised her for her clear, clear expression and her ability to bring the story back to life without distracting it from the content.
According to her family, She was a talented musician who played Group groove therapy often brings joy to seniors and veterans around Vancouver.
She was also known for her hospitality, and often welcomed friends and family with her homemade bread, heartfelt meals and the smell of homemade jam.
Born January 11, 1956 in Chilliwack, BC, Newman was the youngest of seven children of the Newman family.
She remained deeply connected to her roots, spending time living and working in various Canadian cities, including Toronto and the Scamish, before settling in the Kitsurano area of Vancouver with her longtime partner Brad Copeland.
The couple shared over 30 years of love, laughter, and “dance in the kitchen” as her family lovingly remembered.
She is survived by her partner Brad Copeland, five brothers, Nie, ne, and a large family of friends.
She is killed by her parents Henry and Marion Newman, her sister Bettyloo, brothers Ed, ne. Michael and brother-in-law Don.
The celebration of Diane Newman’s life will be held on June 1st at Royal Canadian Legion 142 around West Point Grey in Vancouver at 1pm.
