CLEVELAND – Will Warren was working on a one-hit shutout when he scored the mound in six innings.
Afterwards, nine batters – only two of them faced – the Guardians stirred up enough runs to win the game.
It quickly happened by their own, but the Yankees’ two-run lead turned into a 3-2 defeat at Progressive Field on Tuesday night.
Cade Smith only needed four pitches to win the Guardians series victory to retire from the bottom of the order at the top of the ninth (14-9).
Carlos Rodon tries to help the Yankees (14-10) stop the sweep on Wednesday afternoon.
Judge Aaron woke up a great full-length night, 4-4 with a double (upping the average to .411) and made a diving catch on the right field.
But that wasn’t enough.
Warren was away from a rough outing that went just 1²/₃ innings against the Rays on Thursday as he had to pitch 38 pitches in two innings, but he got much sharper on Tuesday.
However, he received little in the way of running support.
In the lineup, Ben Rice picked up where he left off when he was drilled to his left elbow on Saturday along with the slider.
On the first pitch of the game, Rice tore a home run over the wall on the tall left field to take a 1-0 lead from Tanner Bibby.
At the fifth bottom, the judge gave Warren a helping hand and chased the dive to the line on the right field to finish the frame.
The judge then led the top of the sixth in the night’s third hit, double two-left field, and in the end he scored 2–0 on a sacrifice fly from Jazz Chisholm Jr.
Stephen Kwan led from the sixth bottom on the right field from a single on line drive, followed by Nolan Jones with a single just passing through the right side.
Aaron Boone then went to the bullpen for Mark Reiter Jr. Mark Reiter Jr. quickly hit the Guardians’ biggest threat, Jose Ramirez, on three pitches.
But parents made things happen with Kyle Manzard on the plate.
Kwan and Jones both took off on the pitch, and JC Eskara jumped out of the stance behind the plate and began to throw away one of them.
However, as the lighter pitch dropped, Eskara went backstop, unable to stop it, allowing both runners to take the extra base to make it 2-1.
Manzard then slams the sinking liner and the judge attempts to play a diving game, but it was out of his range due to the double that tied the game.
After one walk and one walk, the Guardians had a runner in the corner of Angel Martinez. Angel Martinez hit Reiner past 2 base, where he ate Anthony Volpe with tough hops, allowing Manzard to take a 3-2 lead.
