Perhaps the worst sight of the Mets’ early season was arriving in 10 innings Wednesday when Edwin Diaz walked the mound with his trainer.
There were no immediate updates on Diaz, where the areas of obvious discomfort were unclear.
In the innings against the Phillies at Citifield, the Mets closer allowed a go-ahead single to Nick Castellanos, taking one pitch to bat against JT Realmuto before waving to the Mets’ dugout.
Diaz spoke briefly with the staff and left the field.
Diaz pitched a perfect 11-pitch nine innings and returned for his second job for the first time this season. He threw seven pitches on the 10th before being forced to exit.
The Mets’ bullpen has dried up and they already have Huascar Brazobán, Danny Young and Jose Butto, and had to use Max Kranick, who pushed two innings on Monday.

Diaz isn’t his dominant, but the shutdown self is saving six games this season.
